Now that we have a basic understanding of PSI, GPMs and cleaning units-- how does one begin to decide which unit is best for their needs? Glad you asked. Let's talk HOME, PROFESSIONAL and INDUSTRIAL units.
First, let's talk home usage. If the pressure washer will be used for 100 hours or less per year, you can invest in a less expensive unit specifically designed for the home. Often, these will be a cold water gas unit (2700 PSI or below or 5.5 HP or less) or an electric unit (1500 PSI or below with 15 amps, 110v).
Now, on to professional usage. Professional usage is actually defined as anyone using the unit 100 or more hours per year (up to 1,000 hours). So if you have heavy home usage, this could be you too. Professional units are made with much more durable parts-- which increases both the cost and the life of the unit.
Lastly, we have the industrial pressure washers. They are designed to be used from 1,000 to 2,000 hours per year in industrial-type environments. They feature the best parts-- including forged brass pump heads and stainless steel valves-- to withstand operation for 8 hours per day... every day! They feature belt-drive or gear-drive systems while the electric systems have at least 1600-1800 RPM TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) motors. Totally.

This keeps costs down but keep in mind that repairing a home-use unit may cost more than replacing the entire unit.

Most often, it is the unloader valve that will cause problems on a pressure washer. Consider the quality of the unloader value when choosing a pressure washer-- specifically an industrial one.
